Student Organisations

Once you have enrolled on a course and become a student there will be various organisations which you will automatically belong to. The most significant of these are the National Union of Students (NUS) and your own college or university's Students' Union.

NUS

As a student you will automatically become a member of the National Union of Students (NUS). The NUS represents the interests of all Further and Higher Education students in the United Kingdom.

You will be given the opportunity to purchase an NUS Card which acts as proof of your student status and will allow you to claim a wide range of benefits, including discounts on travel, clothes and restaurant meals.

The NUS website provides useful information and advice about all sorts of issues concerning students.

Your Students' Union

Once you enrol on your Higher Education course, in addition to your NUS membership, you will also belong to your college or university’s Students’ Union (SU). Your SU will have welfare officers providing support in different areas and who will look after your rights and interests while you are studying.

SUs run a variety of clubs and societies and organise regular student entertainment. Your SU will also have its own facilities in your college or university, such as a bar, where you can meet up with friends.

The links below will provide you with more details about the services offered by your particular college or university’s Students’ Union, including contact details for SU welfare officers.
