Coping with your course

Studying at university or college is very different from studying at school, and it’s natural to have some concerns about this. However, remember that everyone is in the same position and university tutors are aware that being taught through lectures and seminars is likely to be new to you. Also bear in mind that you met the entry requirements and were selected to go on the course – you wouldn’t have been offered a place if the university didn’t think you could cope with the academic demands of the course.

Once you have started your course, make a timetable which incorporates the lectures and seminars you are required to attend, with additional time set aside for independent study. Don’t get into the habit of missing lectures, even if they are not compulsory, as you are likely to get behind very quickly. If you do find that you are struggling with any aspect of your course then seek advice and support from you personal tutor – do not struggle on in silence.

e: Nicola Willis
Age: 22
Course: Occupational Therapy
Institution: York St. John University

I decided Occupational Therapy was the career for me while I was undertaking another degree at a different university. I was apprehensive about this as I was already halfway through one degree which I enjoyed very much, but I came to realise it was occupational therapy that I eventually wanted to do. I knew some occupational therapists, and the voluntary work I was doing at the time confirmed to me that I wanted to work with people in a health setting and to help them achieve their individual potentials. I started to research Universities that did occupational therapy degrees and visited a variety of universities across the country.

I decided to come to York for several reasons.  Firstly, it is a beautiful city; the quirky little streets with equally quirky names and unique shops remind me of something from a JK Rowling novel. York also has an array of things to see and do. Secondly, the occupational therapy course at York St John University is one of the oldest in the country and has a good reputation. When I went to the open day the tutors were very friendly and informative and answered all of my questions about the course. I have enjoyed my first year at York so far and I am certain that I made the right decision to come here. The course is taught in an engaging way and the classes are interactive and fun. I would encourage anyone who is considering coming to study here to come for a visit and to have a look for themselves
