Students - Registering with a doctor
Once you have enrolled at a college or university you need to register with a doctor as soon as possible. Then if you become unwell you will be able to seek medical treatment immediately. For those of you not familiar with the UK health system, it’s free if you are studying full-time and have permission to be in the UK as a student for longer than six months.
Each of the institutions in York has a health centre where you will be able to seek advice on a range of health related matters. At some institutions, particularly if you have a place in halls, you may be able to register with a doctor here. If you are going to be living in private accommodation in York you will need to decide which doctor’s surgery to register with. There is also an NHS Walk-In Centre situated in the centre of York. This is open seven days a week and offers a nurse-led service for which no appointment is necessary. Click here for more details about the centre.
If you will be leaving York during the Christmas and Easter breaks you should register as a ‘temporary resident’ with a doctor close to where you will be staying. |
