For a city York is relatively small and so it is easy to get around, whichever method of transport you decide to use. The following information will make travelling around the city even simpler.

See the safety section of this website for details on how to stay safe when you are travelling around York.

Walking
York city centre is small enough to get around on foot and because the central area is pedestrianised there’s no traffic to worry about. Click here for a map of the city centre.

There are many nice walks to do around the city centre taking in historic attractions, the picturesque river Ouse or parkland areas. Click here for details of some of these walks.

Cycling
York is the UK's top cycling city, with 15% of York residents, compared to 3% nationally, travelling to work by bike. This statistic is partly due to the fact that York is so cycle-friendly, with dozens of cycle paths and lots of central places to lock up your bike. The fact that you can easily get around the city on a bike could save you hundreds of pounds on public transport. For more information on cycling in York, including a map of the cycle paths click here.

Buses
A comprehensive bus service operates in and around the City of York. For timetables and local bus information click here.

Park and ride
York’s Park and Ride service is an extremely popular way of travelling into and around the city centre. There are currently five park and ride sites on the outskirts of the city centre – all situated on main roads into York. This scheme allows you to park for free in a secured car park and then continue your journey into the city centre on bus. Bus lanes are provided along many of these routes speeding up the time it takes to reach the city centre. For further details, including bus timetables and current charges click here.

Driving
Due to its proximity to motorways (M62 and M1) and the fact that several main A roads pass through the city centre, York is easily reached by car. On arrival into the city of York there are several, well signposted, car parks. Click here for details of these, including their locations, facilities and charges. You will also find a link to ‘live’ parking information, offering up to the minute reports on whether the car parks have spaces.

Click here for details of a car share scheme, available to anyone travelling in or around York. Through this website you may find someone who drives a similar route to college or university who you could share with, saving you both money on petrol.

Be aware that at peak times there is often heavy traffic around York’s pedestrianised centre. As a result of this you may opt to use the ‘park and ride’ system (detailed above) as this saves you having to drive into the city centre.
