City Centre shops
York’s city centre is very compact making it ideal for shopping. York also combines all the usual top high street stores, with smaller independent shops, catering for everybody’s tastes and needs. The Shambles is particularly good for these more specialised shops.

The city market lies between The Shambles and Parliament Street and contains 120 stalls within a pedestrianised area. The market offers something for everyone with a wide variety of fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and meat. There are also stalls containing clothes and household goods.

Supermarkets
There are several supermarkets situated in, or on the outskirts of, York city centre. Some of the largest ones are listed below:

Sainsbury’s – Foss Bank (city centre) and Monks Cross retail park

Tesco – Tadcaster Road and Clifton Moor retail park

Asda – Monks Cross retail park

Out of town shopping centres
There are three out-of town shopping centres on the outskirts of York. At Monks Cross you will find Asda and Sainsbury’s supermarkets alongside many other high street stores. At the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet you will find designer-label clothing at reduced prices. Finally at Clifton Moor you’ll find a range of shops, many of them containing home and lifestyle goods, along with a 12 screen multiplex cinema and various fast food restaurants. The links will give you more information about these centres, including their opening hours and how to reach them.

Cheap shopping in York
There are lots of opportunities to save money when you are shopping in York. Most days there is a market between Parliament Street and the Shambles. As well as the fresh fruit and vegetables here being cheaper than in the supermarkets, you will also find stalls with excellent value clothing and household items.

The McArthur Glen Designer Outlet is situated a few miles to the south of York and contains a large number of shops selling designer clothes. These stores offer discounts of up to 50% off the regular retail prices. Click here for more information about the outlet.

Other value for money shops located in York include Netto, Matalan and TK Maxx.

There are also a number of good charity shops in York; have a look around Goodramgate, Micklegate and Gillygate for bargains.
