Higher York eLearning Network

The Higher York e-Learning Network comprises Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) enthusiasts with a range of backgrounds and roles (technical, academic, advisory, management etc), from across the City of York.

The core partners within the group are York St John University, the University of York, Askham Bryan College and York College. The network meets regularly once a quarter, where meetings are hosted on a rotating basis at a partner institution. We share good TEL practice across our working contexts and often present project work around key and emerging themes.

People who are interested in getting involved with the network should email: Mark Dransfield m.dransfield@yorksj.ac.uk or Richard Walker richard.walker@york.ac.uk

Date of the next meeting: Thursday 8 December 2011, 14.00 - 16.00, York St John University

Conference 2011

The network ran it's first conference in June of 2011 at York St John University. With wide-ranging contributions form across the partnership, the event was stimulating and thought-provoking for delegates.

The conference enabled a sharing of new teaching ideas, from online role play to video-based essay feedback. Through the workshops, academics and learning technology support staff were able to explore ways to build collaboration across partner institutions. The conference also looked at how to deal with some of the issues facing students today, such as e-safety on social networking sites like Facebook and supporting distance learning through online and ‘cloud’ technology. A keynote address was delivered by Professor Craig Mahoney, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Academy, who set the scene for the day with his own national and international perspectives on technology. The day finished with a panel discussion looking at how Higher Education providers can use e-learning to improve what they have to offer to new students at a time of change for the Higher education sector. Jessica Grant, Director of Higher York, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the partner organisations to work together and improve the student experience in York. These new technologies ensure that York continues to be recognised as a pioneering city for Further and Higher Education.”
