Internships

A range of different internship and placement options exist across the universities and colleges in York:

Summer Vacation Internships: A short project-based work placement undertaken during the summer vacation period. Students are paid a training allowance which is exempt from tax and NI

One-year Internships: As part of their degree course, students undertake a year in industry. Sectors and positions vary - undergraduate courses are available across a wide range of areas so students are interested in a diverse array of opportunities. These internships should be paid at a fair market rate.

Part-time Internships: This scheme is output based, designed around a specific project. This scheme is available throughout the year, allowing projects to be delivered alongside students' studies. Students generally spend around one day per week working for an organisation, either remotely, or on their premises, depending on the nature of the project (students are permitted to work up to a maximum of sixteen hours per week during term time). Part-time interns are paid a training allowance from £6 per hour, which is exempt from tax and NI.

Part-time & short term placements: Undergraduate students are required to gain some experience in a field related to their degree subject. Placements are usually organised by students themselves or their tutors but employers are always welcome to offer opportunities. These internships range from 3 days to several weeks and are normally unpaid.

PhD Internships. A flexible scheme where organisations come up with a specific business challenge that can be translated into a discrete piece of high-level research for PhD students to complete. Students spend the equivalent of 3 to 4 weeks (120-160 hours) working on the project over a 2-3 month period, allowing time for reflection and development.
